Chronic low back pain affects millions of people worldwide, and the numbers are only increasing. In the US, about one-fourth of adults report having low back pain and sciatica that last a whole day or even more. Low back pain is also associated with reduced quality of life, psychological symptoms, and disability. There are many treatment options, but not many have strong evidence for it being effective while others are just expensive (like acupuncture and physical therapy). But, after having searched for cost effective and successful treatment options, it was clear that I needed to try yoga.
Yoga involves a process of physical and mental training for a harmonious relationship between the mind, body, and human spirit. For the past ten years, yoga interventions for low back pain have been studied as a treatment option. With chronic low back pain, studies have been conducted that demonstrate the beneficial effects for adults who suffer from the pain. It has been shown that yoga is able to improve flexibility, as well as decrease disability and depression. Additionally, it was shown that yoga is able to statistically improve patient balance, gait, and can help with osteoarthritis. With chronic low back pain, yoga used as an intervention allowed for two times greater reduction in pain and reduced the amount of pain medication taken by the subjects compared to the controlled (subjects who did not do yoga).
Yoga has the ability to reduce pain and disability, all while helping improve mental and physical functioning. It is a safe, cost-effective intervention for chronic low back pain. So, if you’re one of the millions of people suffering from low back pain, try some yoga exercises at home or take a class!

I’ve heard so many great benefits of yoga but haven’t really had the opportunity try it. Do you have any recommendations for yoga studios or videos at home for a beginner?
