Should you be eating that last slice of chocolate cake?
Obesity can be the cause and/or the contributor to low back pain. Carrying extra weight has the ability to place unnecessary stress on the pelvic, back and spine causing for the development of chronic back pain. Studies have shown that the risk of low back pain is related to both the increase in body mass index and body fat percentage, where both correspond to the risk and rate of back problems. The American Journal of Epidemiology conducted a research that demonstrated that people of normal weight had low risk of back problems, while people who were obese had the highest risk. Additionally, obesity can also be a contributor to back pain. The increase in fat tissue can trigger metabolic changes that play as big of a role in back pain with weight itself. Obesity also has the ability to intensify other back conditions that are present such as herniated disc and spine osteoarthritis.
If you are overweight or obese, the extra weight you are carrying is adding pressure to your back and spine. Losing some weight would be able to reverse back symptoms caused by the extra weight and allow you to feel a lot better. So, next time let’s skip on buying fast food and go for a healthier more nutritious option, start exercising, and let’s start the path to losing some weight!
