Gabapentin is an anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. With other medications, Gabapentin is used to prevent and control seizures in people who have epilepsy. Additionally, Gabapentin can affect chemicals and nerves in the body, allowing for relief of nerve pain in adults.
Gabapentin affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain.
In adults, Gabapentin can treat neuropathic pain (nerve pain).
The medication can cause some side effects to watch out for:
- Weak or shallow breathing
- Blue-color skin, lips, fingers, and toes
- Confusion
- Extreme drowsiness or weakness
- Problems with balance
- Loss of coordination
- Unusual or involuntary eye movements
- Increased seizures
- Blurred vision
- Shaking (tremor)
