The second most frequent reason why people make a visit to their physician is due to low back pain. Low back pain is the most common cause of activity limitation to people who are younger than 45 years old. There is a selection of conservative therapy alternatives that are available for treating low back pain, but patients are often displeased with conventional medical approaches. In turn, patients often turn to complementary and alternative medicines to manage their symptoms, with acupuncture having become popular.
So, what is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine and is most commonly used to treat pain. Traditional Chinese medicine describes that acupuncture is a technique used to balance the flow of energy that is believed to flow through the body. It is used for overall wellness, including stress management.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles through the skin at strategic points in the body. With the insertion of these needles into specific points, acupuncture practitioners believe that the energy flow will re-balance. In the view of many Western practitioners, they see the acupuncture points as locations to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissues. There are also those who believe that this stimulation is able to boost the body’s natural painkillers.
With a meta-analysis published in the Journal of Pain, researchers concluded that acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain and that the effects form the treatment is able to persist
over time. The results from the experiment was also able to confirm that acupuncture has aclinically relevant effect compared to those who did not receive acupuncture. This treatment option is able to provide short term relief for those who suffer from chronic low back pain.
Overall, to those who are suffering from low back pain, an option would be to do seek out the acupuncture treatment! It doesn’t hurt to try… well maybe just a slight pinch from the needle.
